John,
I am due to make the closing comments at our end-of-the-year party this Friday. I know it’s the day after tomorrow and this is a sudden notice, but I have to leave early that evening to catch a plane out of town. Therefore, I must ask you to take my place that evening.
I was supposed to give a brief talk about our achievements and thank those who made significant contributions this year. The speech will only be about 10 minutes tong and I have already drafted a copy of my talk, which I will give to you. I’m really sorry that I am putting this on you, but I promise I will make it up to you.
Please drop by my office this afternoon.

Please join us for the event of the year!
