From the end of the 1700s, Kentucky had
a special problem: horseracing. There weren’t many special tracks for
horseracing then, so people would take their horses to the main square and race
them. This was quite dangerous for the people who were walking around! Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. established the Kentucky Derby. After visiting England and studying England’s racetracks and races, he built a racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky, which he named Churchill Downs. On May 17, 1875, the first Kentucky Derby was held.
