On Thursday night, April 13, 1863, Washington D. C. celebrated the victory over the South. The next day, the 16th president of the U. S. , Abraham Lincoln, held what was his last meeting. That evening Lincoln, his wife and a young couple, their guests, attended a performance at a theatre. There as he sat in the box, he was shot in the head by an actor, who jumped from the box to the stage and ran away. The assassin was captured days later in the countryside. Lincoln died in a downstairs bedroom of a house not far from the theatre on the morning of April 15.（）
