The results are in and a team from Canada’ s University of Waterloo is the winner of this year’ s International S36 ______ Computer Programming Contest. Established in 1970, the competition S37 ______ by IBM is the world’s oldest and largest college-level programming contest. Almost 6, 000 student programmers, representing universities in 59 countries, competed in S38 ______ rounds this year rather last year.
More than 60 S39 ______ from around the world gathered earlier this week at the Technical University of Eindhoven in the S40. Each three-member team was given one computer arid five hours to program it to solve eight different problems. The top finishing American team, from Duke University in North Carolina, came in fifth. Meetesh Karia said he and his teammates worked well together.
"We actually worked pretty smoothly on using the computer, and S41 ______ off--whenever you had problems, you would just print out the program, and have to ’S42 ______ ’ it without using a computer. So it took a lot of teamwork. S43
IBM official Gabby Silberman says the annual computer-programming contest serves an important purpose:
