It is difficult to live without a car in modern America.
Cities and towns are built around the automobile. This is a
design loci that must be avoided in the future. Future corn- (1) ______

A common argument against cars is that they pollute

many resources are consumed in the production of cars. In
a world with a constantly increasing population, the manu-
facture of new cars is not something that can be sustained
and provided with all the people of the world. Not only (8) ______
does the production and operation of cars drain society,
but the attitude associated with the automobile endangers
the future. It is not advantageous for individuals to drive
everywhere because as the population increases, it will lead (9) ______
incredible congestion within urban areas—a drain both (10) ______
time and resources that can be avoided with proper
planning for the future.
