Historic National Road
I. What you’ll see:
The route of the Historic National Road is a road of history. River transportation and (1) , and historic cemeteries tell the struggles of the early settlers. And you can still find soda fountains, one-room schools, and old hotels. Museums are found all along the byway. You can appreciate (2) Native American life and giant earthwork mounds.
II. Archaeological:
The remarkable World (3) Archaeological Site consists of the largest mound buildings which were built by Native Americans on the North American continent. You may notice Woodhenge next to the road, which is a large circle of wooden posts.
III. Historical:
Construction of the Illinois section was started in 1831, and the section to Vandalia was completed in 1836. But the National Road fell into (4) , only to be resurrected in the early 1920s. On the eastern end of the byway is the Illinois’ oldest (5) operating hotel. And also, the village of Greenup is on the eastern end which was (6) as a Historic Business District on the National Register of Historic Places.
IV. Natural:
The Wabash River is on the east end of the Historic National Road in Illinois, and the (7) Mississippi River lies on the west end. The Embarras River Basin is on the east side, the Wabash River Basin lies in the central area, and the Sinkhole Plain lies on the west side, which is contained in the Mississippi River Basin.
V. Recreational:
The byway offers many recreational opportunities. Numerous state parks allow you to enjoy the natural (8) of the byway. At Lincoln Trail State Park, you can enjoy hiking, fishing, boating, or camping. Even in winter, you can also enjoy ice fishing, ice skating, and cross-country skiing. Other recreational opportunities are available in other parks, such as waterfowl hunting, (9) , bird-watching, camping and golf.
VI. Scenic:
The route is dotted with towns and rural communities, interspersed with rural lands and farms. The large metropolitan area of the western edge of the byway provides a different kind of scene. The eastern (10) and forests provide a scenic view, which is different from the fiat views presented on the western edge of the byway.
