单项选择题
People celebrate many kinds of anniversaries--birthdays, weddings, dates of employment, and so on. Some think that spending a lot on these is a waste of money, while others believe that they are of importance to the young and the society. Before any conclusion is reached, we need to look into this issue closely.
It is well justified to celebrate anniversaries, as every individual in the society enjoys the freedom of spending money on what they like. Parties and activities are organized to celebrate people’s birthdays as they hold specific meanings, which is a good opportunity for friends and relatives to catch up on each other’s life. Also, carrying with them a series of special meanings, weddings are often celebrated in an as impressive and luxurious way as possible. Much of the celebration is an expression of good spirit and cheer, as well as a demonstration of friendship and family bond.
However, luxurious birthday and wedding celebrations have negative effects. As birthday parties are gaining more and more popularity, they themselves have started to bear some different purposes. Most people, especially youngsters, tend to take them as occasions to show off their wealth or social status, which will inevitably disrupt social fabrics. As a result, more spending on these celebrations will produce a vicious circle. This practice not only goes against our national tradition of being thrifty and frugal, but more importantly, with this trend continuing, some families’ inability to hold these celebrations will possibly make the young commit crimes to get the money.
To conclude, people have the right to manage their income and expenses. Yet in order to avoid the negative influences it may cause, we should give positive and proper suggestions to people and advocate thrift instead of overspending on those celebrations.
