his family.[听力原文]Jane Austen is an English novelist. She was born in Steventon, near Basing Stoke, on December 16, 1775. She was one of the many children of a clergyman whose income was sufficient to support his family and whose literate tastes created an urbane atmosphere in the Austen home. She enjoyed an affectionate intimacy with her brother and her sisters. Jane never married but resided and worked in her family s home. The Austens lived largely in the English countryside, and Jane came to know al] of country society, from the village apothecary to the landed aristocracy. She died in Winchester on July 18, 1817, and was buried in the cathedral. One of her most famous novels is Sense and Sensibility, in which sentimentality is seriously attacked as a source of emotional in sufficiency. Another famous novel is Pride and Prejudice, the most popular and wittiest of her novels. This novel resembles the 18th-century comedy of manners with which her work has been too generally associated, and she herself was later dissatisfied with the sustained playfulness and epigrammatism of the general style.

disillusionment.[听力原文]After World War Ⅰ, many American novelists produced a literature of disillusionment. Some lived abroad and were known as The Lost Generation . F. Scolt Fitzgerald was among this group. His novels captured the restless, pleasure-hungry, defiant mood of the 1920s. His prose was exquisite, yet his vision was essentially emotional. Another famous novelist of The Lost Generation was Ernest Hemingway. Having seen violence and death close at hand, Hemingway adopted a moral code exalting simple survival and the basic values of strength, courage and honesty. In his own writing, he cut out all unnecessary words and complete sentence structure, concentrating on concrete objects and action. His main characters were tough, silent men, good at sports or war but awkward in their dealings with women. Among his best books were The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls. He eventually won the Nobel Prize and is considered one of the greatest American writers. The Lost Generation didn t form a clear picture of their lives and the future of their country. They had a feeling of aftermath. F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway were the two most representative novelists of The Lost Generation .
