In almost every country in the world, people think that birthday is one of the most important days of the year: They want to remember the day of their birth and to mark the passing of another year in their life. In different countries, special social customs have developed to mark birthdays.
For example, on a typical British birthday, everyone who knows you will say "Happy Birthday" to you. You will receive birthday cards with greetings like "Many Happy Returns" or "Best Wishes for a Happy Birthday" on them. Perhaps there will be a birthday party where your family and friends bring you blessing. Near the end at the party, there will be a special birthday cake which has small candles on it, one for each year of your life. First someone lights the candles and turns off the lights. Then everyone sings "Happy Birthday". The most important moment of the party is when the person whose birthday it is close his eyes, secretly makes a wish and then blow out the lighted candles. People believe that the wish will come true if they blow out all the candles on the first try. After that the cake is cut into pieces, and everyone has a piece.
