Today we are going to know something about Santa Fe, the capital city of New Mexico, USA. Santa Fe is in the central part of the state, on the Santa Fe River, flowing into the Rio Grande 35 kilometers west of the city. It is more than two thousand meters above sea level, and it is located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains with the Ortiz Mountains to the southeast.
It was said that the Spanish founded Santa Fe in 1609 which was only an old Indian village. The Indians made the place under their control in 1680, but after twelve years Santa Fe was in the Spanish’s possession again. The city was out of Spanish rule when Mexico got its independence (独立) in 1821. Ever since then, it was known as a Mexican city. However, it was taken over by American troops in 1846.
Santa Fe is now the second largest city in the state, the population of which is 48,953. It is a good place for people to spend holiday, as the weather is pleasant. It also has complex history and is surrounded by mountains. Apart from hunting and skating in the mountains, people also enjoy shopping in the Indian and Spanish shops, which benefits a lot to the city’s income every year. There is an international opera season in summer, and operas are shown in a partly-roofed, open-air theatre daily for people coming from all parts of the world. So you can’t miss it if you have chance to travel to America.
