Thanksgiving Day comes on the fourth Thursday in November. All the stores, tanks, schools, and offices close. The people can spend the day with their families. When the first English colonists landed in 1620 near Cape Corn, Massachusetts, their first year was very hard. The winter was much colder than they were used to and many people died.
With the Indians’ help, conditions began to improve in the spring of 1621. In the fall, they had a good harvest. There were plenty of vegetables and fruit. They also caught a lot of fish and wild animals. At this moment, they looked back over the past year. They were both regretful and thankful. Only fifty of the original one hundred people survived. On the other hand, they were happy to see new hope for the future. They knew they had enough food for the next winter. "The worst is over," said one of the leaders. "We should thank God for his goodness to us. Let’s have a day of thanksgiving." His suggestion was happily accepted by all the people and this is the origin of the Thanksgiving Day
