The Open University was established in 1969 to provide degree courses in correspondence for students of 21 years and over, 【1】______ regardless whether they have the entrance qualifications normally 【2】______ required by the universities. The university now has some 75 thousand students, the majority of which have full time jobs. They【3】______ study at their home about 12-15 hours a week for about 30 weeks of【4】______ the year. Most of their work is with printed, self-instructional materials and textbooks, even these are 【5】______ supplement by some television and radio programs (broadcast 【6】______ specially by the BBC ), and some face-to-face tuition is also available. Certain courses entail a week for summer school. Courses【7】______ are available in art, social sciences, educational studies, mathematics【8】______ and technology. Each year, approximately one for every 16 students【9】______ graduating from UK institutions is from the Open University. Similar institutions offering high education by distance teaching【10】______ have been set up in several other countries, including Pakistan and Germany. 【M1】
